SSV Student Leaders 2022 Outcomes Summary
As part of its Strategic Directions 2020 to 2030, School Sport Victoria is committed to listening to students to help inform the design and delivery of school sport to maximise participation. As a result, in 2022, School Sport Victoria established the inaugural SSV Student Leaders program.
Twenty-two students were selected in the Student Leaders Group for 2022, representing a diverse group of students in terms of their gender, abilities, background and location in Victoria. Students were selected across primary and secondary level, from Years 5 to 12.
Students brought their personal opinions and experience to the group discussions and sought the opinion of their peers. Students were supported by a teacher mentor, which was a nominated teacher at the school, to assist with gathering feedback and supporting their participation in the program.
The Student Leaders was led by two engaging facilitators (Ellie Cole – Paralympian and Team Vic Alumni) and Brad Marais (VIS athlete and Team Vic Alumni) who have lived experience in school and elite sport. They supported the student discussion and feedback within an encouraging and welcoming environment.
In order share the important learnings and outcomes of the 2022 Student Leaders program with the broader School Sport Victoria workforce as well as Victorian schools, SSV have created a summary of the 2022 program. This summary includes the learnings across the four key themes that were explored in the program:
- Exploring Sports: that will engage more students to participate in both competitive and non-competitive school sport
- Design a Participation Activity: to design a new non-competitive sport, physical activity program
- A Positive Experience: making the school sport experience enjoyable and welcoming for all students
- Knocking Down Barriers: to sport that are often experienced by students
The Student Leaders program will run again in 2023.
