MULTIPLE CLASSIFICATION (MULTICLASS) INFORMATION

Multiclass is the format used to create meaningful competition, for athletes and swimmers with a disability, from multiple classification impairment categories. Multiclass events are held in Swimming,  Cross Country and Track and Field, with some minor modifications to the rules and regulations, where necessary.

School Sport Victoria is looking to increase participants at the three major Multiclass events this year, Swimming, Cross Country and Track and Field.

Who can compete?

Multiclass events are designed for athletes and swimmers with a disability.

To compete in Multiclass events, competitors must have a current, eligible classification of either a provisional, national, international or review status.

A multiclass athlete can enter the pathway via one of the three streams below. Click on the one most relevant.

Classifications

What is a Classification?

Classification groups athletes who have similar impairments together into classes for competition in their particular sport. The classification assessment process is managed by the national federation for the sport, in conjunction with other system partners.  When a multiclass student first shows interest in participating in an SSV interschool event the school, parent or guardian are encouraged to commence the process of classification.  The process can take time so it's best to commence this process well before the first level of competition (i.e. Primary students District or Secondary Students Division).

General information about classification and its role in sport can be accessed by following the classification map. Click the classification map and then click on the relevant links in the PDF document.

Multiclass Scoring

Multiclass events are held at all Swimming, Cross Country and Track and Field Championships, with each sport having a specific scoring system to determine results.

SwimmingBaseline Performance Scoring

In Swimming, Multiclass results are determined using the Multiclass Point Score (MCPS).

In this system, an athlete’s time is compared to the world record (or similar) for their specific disability and event, to create a score.

Results and overall placings are determined by using the scores achieved. The competitor with the greatest score wins.

Find more information about MCPS and the MCPS calculator please visit the Swimming Australia website.

Cross CountryBaseline Performance Scoring

In Cross Country, Multi Class results are determined using Baseline Performance.

In this system, an athlete’s time or distance is compared to the MDS time for their specific disability and event, to create a percentage.

The MDS times have been created using averaged results and records from; Paralympic and World Championships, plus Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20 Australian events.

Results and overall placings are determined by using the percentages achieved. The competitor with the greatest percentage wins.

Find more information about MDS and the MDS scoring Excel spreadsheet on Athletics Australia.

Track & FieldBaseline Performance Scoring

In Track & Field, Multiclass results are determined using Baseline Performance.

In this system, an athlete’s time or distance is compared to the world record (or similar) for their specific disability and event, to create a percentage.

Results and overall placings are determined by using the percentages achieved. The competitor with the greatest percentage wins. Baseline Performance scoring system.

WheelTalk Disability Awareness

Every year our WheelTalk Disability Awareness Program visits thousands of students to raise disability awareness and promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Visit Wheeltalk's Disability Awareness' Website for more information.

What is WheelTalk?

An interactive program teaching students about diversity, acceptance and disability.

Presenters are Victorians with a disability who are actively involved in sport and recreation.

At the end of the presentation, participants play up to an hour of wheelchair basketball, which gives them a physical understanding of what it is like to live with a disability.
